Idris Elba and Sabrina Dhowre walked the red carpet of the Met Gala in New York on 6 May 2019, their first public appearance together since their wedding in Morocco ten days earlier.
Elba wore a suit with a boldly patterned jacket, while Dhowre chose a strapless metallic gown and showed off a short, pink-toned haircut. The theme of the 2019 gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was Camp: Notes on Fashion, which invited guests to go theatrical.
A wedding in Marrakech
The couple married on 26 April 2019 at Ksar Char Bagh, a hotel set in gardens in the palm grove of Marrakech, with family and friends around them. Dhowre wore two gowns by Vera Wang, and Elba wore a suit by British designer Ozwald Boateng, according to British Vogue, which published the first pictures of the celebrations.
How they met
Elba, 46 at the time, met Dhowre, a Canadian model, in Vancouver in 2017 while he was filming the drama The Mountain Between Us. He proposed in February 2018 in front of an audience at a London cinema, during a screening of Yardie, the first feature film he directed.
The actor is no stranger to the Met Gala. In 2016 he was one of the event’s co-chairs, alongside Taylor Swift, Jony Ive and Vogue editor Anna Wintour. A few months before the wedding, People magazine had named him its Sexiest Man Alive for 2018.
